The Cateran Society- The Cateran Society was founded in 1998, to research the historical use of the Highland weapons such as the basket-hilted broadsword, targe, two-handed sword, dirk and Lochaber axe. Here you will find the history of the Cateran Society, as well as a selection of articles and historical research.

Join the Cateran Society Discussion Group- Our online discussion group for the Cateran Society. Joining the group gives you membership in the Cateran Society, which entitles you to participate in our online programs and to contribute research of your own.

The Broadsword Academy- Cateran Society president Christopher Scott Thompson maintains the Cateran Society Broadsword Academy in Portland, ME, where members study the Regimental Highland Broadsword system of the late 18th century, the older Highland Broadsword system of Thomas Page from 1746, and Page’s method of sword and targe combat.

The Apprenticeship Program- Members of the Apprenticeship Program have the opportunity to study any or all of the arts we teach, working with a combination of hands-on personal instruction via seminars and workshops, as well as the extensive written materials we have available, and our complete online curriculum. The exact mix of seminar time and distance learning will depend on the life circumstances of the individual student, but personal instruction will be emphasized to the greatest extent possible in every case. Participation in the program is free of charge, with the exception of any travel costs required for seminars. If this is something that you would like to be involved in, please contact Christopher Thompson at
gilbride100@hotmail.com for details of enrollment.
