The Cateran Society was founded in 1998, to research the historical use of the Highland weapons such as the basket-hilted broadsword, targe, two-handed sword, dirk and Lochaber axe.
In addition, Society president Christopher Scott Thompson maintains the Cateran Society Broadsword Academy in Portland, ME, where members study the Regimental Highland Broadsword system of the late 18th century, the older Highland Broadsword system of Thomas Page from 1746, and Page’s method of sword and targe combat.
Recently, we also started the Broadsword League, a venue for competitive fencing with the broadsword, backsword, heavy sabre and singlestick. Students of the Broadsword Academy are enthusiastic competitors in the League, but you don’t have to be a student or even a member of the Cateran Society to compete- all broadsword, backsword and heavy sabre fencers are welcome.
